Free consults and workouts: smart or awkward?

Blog ·

Under every post about free workouts, sooner or later the same argument shows up:

A good specialist does not work for free. People still do not value free stuff.

Sounds logical.

When a free workout is just unpaid work

A free workout really can be a waste of time. If you just give an hour of value and at the end say:

"Well, if anything - get in touch"

Then yes, you just worked for free.

When a consult is part of the sale

But a free consultation can be part of the sale.

Your job is not to run one more session. It is to understand what the person wants, what is in the way, and show how you can help.

For example, the client says: "I want to lose 10 kg."

You do not just tell them which exercises to do.

You go through their routine, nutrition, previous experience, explain where they are now and what has to change to get the result.

And if after that the person thinks: "Okay, I need this coach" - the consult was no longer free for you.

It brought a client.

How the numbers look

And then you can actually count:

You ran 10 consults - 3 clients bought coaching at $300.

You spent a few hours on consults, but you got $900 in new revenue.

A free consult is not a required part of a coach's job. But it is a normal tool if you know how to use it and when it is worth the work.

From pushing a sale to helping them see if it fits

You can keep being afraid of sales and thinking:

"Coaching is not about marketing." "People do not value free stuff." "A good specialist values their time." "People will come on their own."

Or you can shift from "I am pushing workouts on someone" to "I am helping them see whether my way of working fits them."

And then the client decides.
